What they do

DWP Digital exists to build and maintain the digital infrastructure behind the UK's welfare state. The Department for Work and Pensions is the largest public service department in the country, handling welfare, pensions and child maintenance policy. Every year it transacts around £212 billion in payments. DWP Digital is the part of that organisation responsible for the technology that makes those transactions possible.

The work spans a wide range of citizen-facing services. These include Universal Credit, the Carer's Allowance Digital Service, Personal Independence Payment applications, the Bereavement Service, Check your State Pension, and the Child Maintenance Service. Behind the scenes, teams work on payment services, identity and trust, secure communications, data engineering and infrastructure. The blog archive — running back to 2013 — gives a reasonable picture of the breadth: agile delivery, APIs, cloud, DevOps, data science, site reliability engineering, user research and interaction design all feature regularly.

One concrete example of the API work: a team led by senior business analyst Hayley Goldthorpe built a service allowing other government departments — including the Department for Education and HMRC — to make automated eligibility checks against DWP's Universal Credit data. Previously, users had to provide proof of eligibility manually and departments had to process checks by hand. The API removed that friction, letting DWP respond to eligibility requests from DfE and HMRC without sharing personal data directly.

DWP Digital also runs cross-government collaboration programmes. In October 2024, DWP and the Ministry of Justice hosted a series of Reverse Pitch events in Leeds, London and Manchester, bringing in over 200 innovators from 34 small businesses to work on complex citizen-facing challenges. That kind of outreach is consistent with the organisation's stated interest in working with startups and smaller suppliers.

Where they sit in Leeds

Leeds is one of DWP Digital's main engineering hubs. The organisation participates in the Leeds Digital Festival and has hosted events in the city, including the October 2024 Reverse Pitch. Recruitment is ongoing. DWP Digital runs a University Leavers Graduate programme — applications for the 2026 cohort closed in March 2026 — as well as apprenticeships recognised at the Makers Awards. Industrial placements and work experience are also offered; a blog post from May 2026 describes a week-long placement at the Newcastle hub, suggesting the programme runs across multiple locations.

The organisation has a Digital Academy for internal capability building, communities of practice across disciplines, and a track record of cross-government collaboration on shared platforms and data standards.
