Lambda, observability & more

The July 2026 edition of AWS User Group Leeds covers two practical topics: observing applications running on AWS Lambda using OpenTelemetry, and building a learning platform on serverless infrastructure with AI assistance. This is the session that was cancelled at short notice in May, rescheduled to Tuesday 14 July at Accenture's offices on Wellington Street.

Darasimi Ajewole opens the technical programme with a talk on Lambda and OpenTelemetry — a modern approach to instrumenting serverless functions for tracing, metrics and logs. The second slot is listed as TBC at time of writing. Doors open at 17:45, talks run from 18:15 to roughly 19:30, and the evening continues informally at the Editor's Draft nearby.

Pizza and drinks — alcoholic and non-alcoholic — are provided by the event sponsor, Accenture Software & Platform Engineering. If you have dietary requirements, the organisers ask that you flag them before the day.

AWS User Group Leeds has been running regular community meetups for engineers working with AWS across the city. The group covers the full range of AWS services and adjacent topics: serverless, infrastructure as a service, DevOps, software architecture. Events are free, open to all, and governed by an anti-harassment code of conduct. The organising team, led by Dave R., actively works to broaden the speaker lineup and attendee mix beyond the usual demographic. If you have experience you think sits outside the mainstream of the tech community, they want to hear from you.

Why attend

Darasimi Ajewole's talk on Lambda and OpenTelemetry is a concrete, applied session for engineers already working with serverless on AWS who want better visibility into what their functions are actually doing in production. OpenTelemetry is increasingly the standard instrumentation layer across cloud providers, so this is directly applicable knowledge.
