Lambda, observability & more

AWS User Group Leeds returns on Tuesday 14 July 2026 with a session focused on observing applications running on AWS Lambda. The headline talk comes from Darasimi Ajewole, covering Lambda and OpenTelemetry — a practical look at how to instrument serverless functions using the open-source observability framework. A second talk on building a learning platform entirely on serverless solutions using AI is also on the bill, though the speaker for that slot is yet to be confirmed.

This is a rescheduled event: the original session was cancelled at short notice in May. The format is a standard evening meetup running from 5:45 PM to around 8:30 PM BST. Doors open at 17:45, pizza arrives at 18:00, and talks begin at 18:15 after a brief intro. There is a break at 19:15, with the second talk starting at 19:30. After the formal programme wraps up, attendees are invited to continue the conversation at the Editor's Draft nearby.

Accenture Software & Platform Engineering are sponsoring and hosting the event at Aspley House on Wellington Street in Leeds city centre. They are providing drinks — alcoholic and non-alcoholic — and pizza on the night. The group asks that anyone with dietary requirements gets in touch before the day.

AWS User Group Leeds is one of the longer-running cloud-focused communities in the city. Hosted by Dave R., the group brings together engineers, architects and developers working with AWS to share practical experience rather than vendor slides. The group operates a code of conduct and anti-harassment policy, and the organising team actively works to broaden the range of speakers and attendees. Why attend

Darasimi Ajewole's talk on Lambda and OpenTelemetry is the concrete draw here. If you are running workloads on AWS Lambda and struggling to get useful observability data out of them, this is directly applicable. OpenTelemetry has become the de facto standard for vendor-neutral instrumentation, and seeing it applied specifically to serverless is useful context.

Beyond the talks, this is a free evening with pizza, drinks and a room of Leeds-based AWS practitioners. The group is established enough that you are likely to meet people working on similar problems.
