Code and Coffee

Code and Coffee is a weekly informal gathering in Leeds city centre, held every Tuesday morning at 8am at La Bottega Milanese on Bond Court. There is no agenda, no talks, no structured activity. People turn up, order a coffee, open a laptop, and get on with whatever they feel like — a hobby project, a tutorial, something they've been meaning to look at for weeks.

The format is deliberately loose. Attendees might spend the hour hacking on a side project, pair up with someone on a problem, or simply talk tech over a flat white before heading into work. The only requirement is showing up. You do not need to be working on anything in particular, and you do not need to be a professional developer. The group explicitly welcomes people who are learning to code for the first time alongside those who do it for a living.

Code and Coffee Leeds is hosted by Matt R. and runs every single Tuesday — not monthly, not quarterly, every week. That consistency is the point. It is the kind of low-pressure, recurring fixture that is easy to build a habit around. Leeds has a reasonable number of evening tech meetups, but early-morning options are rare. This one fills that gap, and has been doing so on a weekly cadence at the same venue in the city centre.

Why attend

If you have a side project gathering dust, an hour before work is a surprisingly productive window. The social pressure of sitting in a room with other people who are also coding helps.

Beyond that, it is a genuine cross-section of Leeds tech — people learning their first language alongside working engineers. No slides, no sponsor pitches. Just coffee and a table of people doing their own thing. Worth trying at least once, and free either way.
