Beyond Pub/Sub - Advanced Messaging Patterns

Poornima Nayar visits Leeds Sharp on Thursday 25 June 2026 to talk through advanced messaging patterns for distributed systems. The session moves past the basics of publish/subscribe to cover patterns that teams actually need once pub/sub stops being enough.

The talk covers four main patterns: the Outbox pattern for preventing message loss during failures; sagas for coordinating long-running workflows without distributed transactions; scatter-gather for parallelising work; and competing consumers for handling demand spikes. Alongside those, Poornima will cover the operational safeguards that hold production systems together — retries, dead-letter queues, back pressure and idempotency. The aim is to leave attendees knowing when to reach for each pattern and how to apply it, rather than just knowing it exists.

The format is a single talk running from 6:45 PM, with pizza and drinks from 6:00 PM. After the session wraps at 8:00 PM, a portion of the group typically heads to either the Brewery Tap or Editors Draft — venue decided by vote on the night.

Leeds Sharp is the city's .NET user group, running regular evening meetups at venues across Leeds city centre. The group draws developers working across the .NET ecosystem, from juniors getting to grips with C# to senior engineers dealing with production architecture decisions.
