What they do

Alcidion makes clinical decision support and patient flow software. Their platform, Miya Precision, sits on top of existing hospital IT infrastructure — electronic patient record systems, pathology, PAS — and transforms that data into FHIR-standard resources. Clinicians get real-time dashboards showing patient status, deterioration alerts, task lists and care communications, without the hospital needing to rip out what it already has.

The platform uses a combination of artificial intelligence, clinical decision support rules and natural language processing to flag critical actions. It is device-agnostic and can run cloud-hosted, on-premise or in a hybrid setup. The modular structure means trusts can start with one solution — say, patient flow boards or observations capture — and expand from there.

The numbers from their 2023 annual report give a sense of scale: 2 billion observations recorded, 119 million assessments and tasks completed, 33 million alerts generated across 95 healthcare organisations.

In the NHS, the case studies are specific. Lancashire Teaching Hospitals reported a 42% reduction in medical errors after deploying Alcidion's clinical communications tools. South Tees Hospitals cut admin burden by 60 minutes per clinician per shift using Miya Precision's clinical decision support. Royal Darwin Hospital saw a 10% increase in patients moved from the ED to a ward within four hours within six months of going live. NHS Fife, the first Scottish deployment, documented 34 million risk assessments through Patientrack (now Miya Observations and Miya Assessments).

The solution set covers eight areas: patient flow, virtual care, an operations centre for integrated care systems, specialised care including emergency departments, integrated care records, a modular cloud-native EPR and PAS, clinical workflow tools (NLP-enabled noting, tasking, clinical communications, Smartpage and Patientrack), and data and analytics.

How they got here

Alcidion was founded in Adelaide, South Australia in 2000. MKM Health, which became part of the group, opened in 2003. Patientrack entered the UK market in 2007, giving the company an early foothold in NHS trusts well before the current wave of NHS digital investment.

The company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2016. A busy 2018 saw three acquisitions: Oncall Systems (provider of Smartpage, a clinical communications platform), MKM Health and Patientrack. In 2019 those three products were unified under the Alcidion brand. In 2021 they acquired ExtraMed Ltd and Silverlink Software, both UK-based, which extended their NHS reach further.

Smartpage, the clinical communications tool, has its own track record. Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley District in New Zealand reported 15 minutes saved per hour for every doctor after deploying it. The product handles messaging between nurses and clinicians, orderly coordination and escalation workflows.

The virtual care arm, Miya Virtual Care, has been used by Sydney LHD's RPA Virtual Hospital to support 85,000 patients, and by Hume Rural Health Alliance and Goulburn Valley Health for remote monitoring of gestational diabetes patients in regional Victoria.

For NHS England specifically, Alcidion positions Miya Precision as a modular electronic bed and capacity management system (eBCMS) to support urgent and emergency care recovery — directly relevant to the current NHS bed shortage and UEC recovery programmes. The platform gives trusts an at-a-glance view of hospital capacity and supports decision-making across site and system level, not just individual wards.
